We already know, for the most part, what life was like for our ancestors from the 19th century. Some people know all this from movies, while others know from Wikipedia. Regardless of your sources, I’m willing to bet that you had no idea people back then were excellent at crafting…no, not swords, not furniture but prosthetic arms. Yup. Amputees back then didn’t only get a brand new metal hand either, but also a highly fashionable metal accessory. Despite it being from the past, it does look like it was inspired by one of the latest horror movies to hit the cinemas.

The fake metal hand (could have used a better choice of words but chose not to), is currently in the possession of the London Science Museum who cleverly described it for future visitors. Apparently, the elbow joint can be moved by releasing a spring, while the top joint of the wrist will allow a degree of rotation and up and down motion. Fingers will also curl up and straighten out. Obviously, the upper leather part is used to fix the prosthesis to the owner’s remaining upper arm.
Scary? A bit. But once you get past it, you’ll have to admit that this arm goes to show just how crafty our forefathers really were.
