Japanese People Laugh in iPhone’s Face

Publicat de Sapphire Sunday, January 21, 2007

Ever since we lay our eyes on the iPhone, not a whole day has gone by without the phone being mentioned in one way or another. It’s not even important if it was mentioned in a good or bad way because in the end, it’s all about publicity, which is what the iPhone has been getting a lot of lately.

It doesn’t even matter if it’s actual advertising we’re talking about. Because the thing is, everybody knows about the iPhone already, even though some time will pass until it starts shipping. But while we all continue to be preoccupied with how great or crappy the iPhone might be, there are some people who simply don’t care because they already have what the iPhone offers plus much, much more. If you haven’t figured out who I’m talking about so far, it’s about the people from Japan. And if you stopped to check what phones KDDI and DoCoMo released so far (rumor has it that Softbank is to follow too), you won’t be at all surprised when you hear that there are few, if any, Japanese people who are thrilled about the iPhone.

And why would they be? Throughout the day of a person from Japan, a mobile phone is used for pretty much everything including watching TV, listening to music, buying and paying for stuff or navigation through GPS. And to top it off, not only do they get to do all that with the phone, but they have a very large number of phones that come with these capabilities, thus a wide variety of designs, sizes and colors to choose from. In fact, I think the only problem a Japanes person has, is to decide what phone to choose from so many.

They don’t have just one phone better than the iPhone,. It’s more like the majority of phones available for them are better. So, if you were to have all that, would you still be interested in the iPhone? While it’s clear that Japan will pretty much stay an iPhone-free country, the rest of us can but wait and hope to get at least the iPhone when KDDI is only something you can dream about.
